HAWAIIAN STYLE QUILTS® COCONUT AND PINEAPPLE
The coconut palm (niu), probably brought by the first Polynesian settlers to Hawai’i, was a significant source of raw materials essential to the lives of early Hawaiians. Posts for houses as well as large hula drums were made from the trunks while roof thatching and fans were fabricated the leaves. Sennit, a strong lashing material, was produced from the husk, and haupia, a still popular dessert, came from the meat of the coconut. The pineapple (halakahiki), once a major commercial crop for which Hawai’i has become famous, was first introduced to the islands in 1813.
